I work with cultural and natural heritage organisations, large and small, to help them provide great experiences for people. By asking visitors and participants – and people who don’t visit or take part – for their opinions, organisations can find out what impact they are having on their audiences, and make informed decisions for future planning. I specialise in project evaluation, visitor studies and community consultation, and help heritage organisations to create learning resources for all ages. Having worked in cultural heritage for over 25 years, I can help your organisation provide great experiences – please get in touch to discuss more.
Environmental, Sustainability and Ethical Statement
We all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce climate change, and live and work in a sustainable and ethical manner. This statement sets out how I aim to achieve these things as a freelance consultant.
Workspace
When IT equipment can no longer be repaired, I recycle it in a responsible manner. I have a second-hand mobile phone to reduce the use of new materials. I print as little as possible, and use re-manufactured print cartridges and re-use, or use recycled or FSC paper. I recycle the empty cartridges via a charity. I buy locally where possible, and if I have to buy things online, I try to choose a supplier which uses Royal Mail rather than a courier to reduce transport emissions, or I use click and collect at a convenient location. Tea and coffee are Fair Trade. If holding a meeting in a café, I always choose an independent one, and if it is a social enterprise that is even better.
Heat and light
My electricity supplier provides 100% renewable energy. Heating is by a wood pellet boiler, using pellets made in Scotland from brash and thinnings from local managed forests. The manufacturer has a recycling scheme for the plastic sacks which the pellets are delivered in, and they are recycled into things such as garden furniture. Light bulbs are low-energy.
Travel
I work from home so there is no commuting which would produce carbon emissions. My car is electric and I charge it at home using 100% renewable energy. I use public transport where possible (bus, tram, train) and only fly if it is essential. Whilst visiting clients and projects in person is important, it is often practicable to hold online meetings instead, to reduce emissions from travelling.
Garden
My garden is managed for wildlife: plants for pollinators, no-mow May (and June), food and water for the birds, untended areas of the garden, no pesticides.
Ethics
I am a member of the Museums Association and the Market Research Society, both of which have ethics policies (which include equality, diversity and inclusion) to which I adhere:
Museums Association Code of Ethics
Market Research Society Code of Conduct
