Bewcastle Cross

To Bewcastle in the Debateable Lands, on the border of Cumbria and Scotland. Here an Anglo-Saxon cross was set up, probably made by the same masons which Benedict Biscop brought from Rome to work on the monastery at Wearmouth Jarrow, where Bede was a monk. Then to the burial ground at the Tower of Sark, where the notorious Border Reiver, Will of Kinmont, is said to be buried. Kinmont Willie's capture, imprisonment in Carlisle Castle, and subsequent release by his comrades, is the subject of the new Discovery Visit at Carlisle Castle.
