New research by the Heritage Lottery Fund shows that heritage makes people feel happier about where they live, and it shapes and improves the quality of life across the UK. The Heritage Lottery Fund has been giving grants for heritage projects large and small for 20 years and this research 20 Years 12 Places looks at how people's lottery ticket money has been spent and what benefits it has brought to communities.

People see heritage: delivering benefits that relate directly to their quality of life; bringing economic benefits like tourism and creating good jobs; making places more visually attractive; providing family leisure opportunities; helping people to understand where they come from, instilling local pride and encouraging social cohesion.
