harvesterWith Forestry Commission forests still under threat, Commission staff at Kielder have been organising visits to see how the forest is planted, maintained and harvested. Mature timber is either sold in advance to customers such as Egger (chipboard), who will send contractors of their own to harvest it, or it is harvested by the Commission and sold for paper, construction timber, pallets or biomass for heating. The harvesters are programmed with a "shopping list" of the lengths and diameters of timber required. As each tree is felled, the harvester trims off the branches and calculates how to cut it up so that the shopping list requirements are completed most effectively.
