Since Heritage Schools began in 2012, I have worked with Qa Research to evaluate the programme to show the impact it has on children and young people learning about their local heritage, linking their local history to national history, and gaining pride and understanding in the place where they live.
Heritage Schools is managed by Historic England and funded by the Department for Education. The report (link removed as no longer available on the Historic England Website 12/12/23) has case studies of eight schools' heritage projects, carried out with museums and other heritage providers. The other strand of the project is CPD for teachers and trainee teachers which is delivered by Local Heritage Education Managers in each region. This training gives teachers, who may not be history or geography specialists, resources and inspiring ideas which they can use in the classroom.
